6.2

2. Describe the creative potential of video and what it can do for art classrooms or education in general (2 paragraphs).

I would like to argue that video is too challenging for the Elementary school students to have in their art class. First, making video mostly requires a group of people getting involved. It is about teamwork. At this stage, students have not fully developed the ability of cooperation and team management. Even in the lower grade, they are still learning about how to share. Second, the process of making the video also require to relate technique knowledge, like operating camera, sound equipment etc.

However, as the new technology being developed, the elementary student can use iPad for the video class. It allows student not to learn the process of operating the camera and able to use this medium directly. In this process, it can involve in a group or working as an individual. Shooting could be a really easy and fun process as this age.

As they grow up, making a video becomes more meaningful for art class in High school. At this stage, students begin to learn and experiment their leadership, and cooperating skill and video class help students to practice those skills. In the process of making video, students begin to share their ideas in  group. They can learn from each other. They can explore to look at the world in different ways. A video making could require narrative storytelling skills. It is a very concise medium to interpret their thoughts into moving images.  It is a medium that doesn’t need a student with great drawing or painting skill and can fulfil their interests by exploring the world via visual art. Students have to learn how to maximize their ability in a team. At the same time, teachers need to make sure that every student has the equal chance to let students present the best of themselves through the process.
