3/2 Kylie Peppler and Nancy Baym

Nowadays, technology cant be defined as a new innovation. It just a new way we live in. The new generation, like us, we can use the technology without anyone teaching us. We were born to know how to use them and it is become part of our body. We create technology and technology response to us as a teacher in a positive way.

New technology force children or even us to learn activity. We never read the instruction book before we use a technology. Rather, we would like to explore directly. The technology speeds up the learning process and develops the self-thinking ability.

The use of social media could bring people in all the world together. However, the negative is it brings us living in a cyberspace. Our body is here but our mind jumps into the other space. We are using our phone to communicate not our mouth. We are turning ourselves in the process of semi-robotic. What is the reality? We just like a robot, if we do not receive any electronic we are dying.

Quinta is a painter for Crows in a wheatfield (2018)

What will it look like when Van Gogh paint himself inside Crows in a wheatfield? Did he wear like a farmer and doing a farmer job? What will it look like if his famous painting turns into a photograph?

This is Van Gogh and I'm the painter.

This is my first time to use Photoshop to do a collage. I was looking at a few Youtube video and surprised by how many things can be created through digital painting. It can make something unreal and turn into reality. Actually, in nowadays society, lots of images uses photoshop to tell untruth story, and this is where digital going in a negative way.

[On/off experiment, part 2: Create a creative/artistic response based on this experience and bring the outcome to our next class so we can share. Take pictures of the outcome and post them on your blog; add a description as needed.]

2/2 On/Off Experiment

On/off experiment, part 1: While having been with your computer/digital devices for a while, decide to leave them and turn them off. Find artful ways to exit “technology.” Document your experience on your blog (1-2 paragraphs).

'Calm down, Calm down, Calm down'

The battery only got 1% what should I do for the rest of my date. I was getting crazy.

'Should I let it go and do my homework?"

'Why not?"

"what should I do?"

'Try someting."

"Meditation?"

"OK, meditaion."

'Breath in, Breath out, Breath in, Breath out, Breath in, Breath out, Breath in, Breath out, Breath in, Breath out, Breath in, Breath out, Breath in, Breath out, .....'

'What am I doing ?"

'Nope, I should do soemting else.'

'Why not doing this......let me do some counting.................

It is an touches process, but it is ok. Trying to think about the time I spend on my cell phone or laptop, I only do work with them. In fact, I enjoy the time without my cell phone. However, I don't enjoy the time doing something without the cell phone on purpose. I kept thinking about my cell phone. When can I get the battery, where can I find the charger?

Read Douglas Rushkoff, either Chapter 1 or 2 (see Canvas/Files "ReadingNMNF#1.pdf), and share two takeaways on your blog. (PS: As I mentioned, New Media New Forms is not primarily reading focused; while the readings will help you to place the art&technology-debate within a broader context and to develop some language, I encourage you to skim the readings only instead of spending a lot of time with them.)

  • Nowadays, people spend a lot of time on new technology, especially on their phone. Negatively, new technology isolate people from the real world.
  • In positive, the new technology brings people in different place working together and make convenience to their life.

Conduct a short research online and locate an artist (or designer) who uses technology as an important part of her studio practice or teaching. Write a blog entry about his/her work and how he/she uses technology creatively (one paragraph; include a reference image of his/her work; do not copy/paste text, use your own words to summarize).

Create an individual blog with a first entry that introduces you and your educational background. Add a few sentences about your experience level with new media. Post a photographic portrait of yourself in the sidebar of your blog. Send your URL to the instructor (rj2137@tc.columbia.edu).
